About Mile Square

Built by someone who’s done the work at every level.

Twenty plus years. Seven different industries. Every role in the discipline — from systems admin to senior security operations leader. Mile Square Cyber Advisory exists because that progression matters for the clients we serve.

The career arc

Built from a foundation of real world, hands-on experience in enterprise security operations, engineering, architecture, and senior leadership.

It started in Indianapolis in the early 2000s, supporting servers, storage, virtualization, networking, desktop, help desk, and of course security, before "full-stack" was a job title. Security wasn’t the assignment — it became the direction.

The two decades plus since covered healthcare security, government compliance, cloud security architecture, and building enterprise-scale security operations programs — across organizations ranging from regulated healthcare providers and government contractors to fast-growing SaaS companies operating globally.

Mile Square is the deliberate next step: taking that accumulated depth and making it available to the organizations that need it most but rarely have access to it — Indianapolis businesses and growing SMBs who deserve real security leadership, not a junior consultant or a fear-based sales pitch.

The differentiator

The player-coach model.

Most security firms are either strategic advisors or technical implementers. Mile Square is both — and that distinction matters for every client engagement.

Strategic leadership

Developing security programs, advising leadership, building roadmaps, and owning the security conversation at the executive level — the same work a CISO does.

Hands-on technical work

Writing detection logic, configuring SIEM and SOAR platforms, building AI-assisted security tooling, hunting threats in live environments — the same work an engineer and operator does.

Why it matters for you

Strategy built by someone who understands implementation is more realistic. Technical work directed by someone who understands business risk is more purposeful. You get both, from one advisor.

AI-native security

Not just recommending AI — actually building it.

Most security advisors have started adding "AI" to their services list. The difference here: the AI-assisted security tooling we recommend is tooling we have designed and deployed in real enterprise environments — detection agents, automated response workflows, AI-augmented threat intelligence briefings, and skill-as-code automation built on Microsoft Copilot Studio and Claude.

That practical depth changes the quality of advice. We know what works, what doesn’t, and where AI genuinely reduces analyst toil versus where it creates noise.

Credentials

The certifications tell the same story as the career.

CISSP and CISM represent executive-level security governance and management thinking. OSCP is an offensive security certification earned through hands-on penetration testing — not a multiple-choice exam. Holding both sets is uncommon, and intentional: understanding how attackers operate is what makes defensive architecture stronger.

The combination of executive-level management credentials and hands-on offensive certification is the credential proof of the player-coach model.

Why Mile Square

Named for a plan that was deliberately mapped out.

In 1821, surveyor Alexander Ralston — who had previously worked on the plan for Washington D.C. — laid out Indianapolis as a precise, deliberate one-square-mile grid radiating out from a fixed center point. Nothing was improvised. Every street, every block, every boundary was intentional.

That’s the approach this firm takes to security. Not reactive, not templated, not borrowed from a framework that doesn’t fit your business. Mapped out deliberately, from the actual center of your risk, built to hold.
